Cancún's Time Zone: Eastern Standard Time Year-Round
The clocks in Cancún never move. The city sits on Eastern Standard Time (EST), UTC−5, every day of the year.
Most of North America flips between EST and EDT. Cancún does not. That means its relationship with New York, Toronto and the rest of US Eastern Time inverts twice a year.
The IANA time zone for Cancún is America/Cancun. It shares the CLDR metazone America_Eastern with New York, Toronto, Detroit and Port-au-Prince. Those cities observe daylight saving. Cancún and Panama do not.
The 2015 Switch: From Central to Eastern Time
Before 2015, Cancún and the rest of Quintana Roo ran on Central Time. That put the state one hour behind New York in winter, two hours behind in summer.
The state government petitioned Mexico's federal government for a change. On 1 February 2015, Quintana Roo moved to Eastern Standard Time permanently. The law abolished DST for the state in the same stroke.
Clocks went forward one hour that February. They never went back.
Why Quintana Roo Changed
The reason was economic. Cancún receives millions of visitors from the US East Coast every year. On the old Central Time arrangement, a 9:00 AM flight from New York landed at 8:00 AM Cancún time in winter. In summer it landed at 7:00 AM. Hotels, tour operators and airlines managed a shifting offset that changed with the seasons.
EST year-round eliminated that complexity. A 9:00 AM departure from New York now lands at 9:00 AM in Cancún in winter. In summer it lands at 10:00 AM. The rule is fixed: Cancún is either the same time as New York, or one hour behind.
The change also captured more usable afternoon light for tourists. Cancún sits at roughly 21° north latitude. Its day length varies far less than New York's. In New York on the December solstice the sun sets at 16:31. On the June solstice it sets at 20:30, a swing of nearly four hours. Cancún's seasonal daylight range is narrower, making a fixed clock far less disruptive than it would be in Montréal or Toronto.
No DST: What That Means for Travelers
Many travelers assume Cancún observes DST because it is in Mexico. It does not.
From the second Sunday of March to the first Sunday of November, US Eastern Time is on EDT (UTC−4). Cancún stays on EST (UTC−5). Cancún is one hour behind. When it is 12:00 PM in New York, it is 11:00 AM in Cancún.
From the first Sunday of November to the second Sunday of March, US Eastern Time is on EST (UTC−5). Cancún matches it exactly. When it is 12:00 PM in New York, it is 12:00 PM in Cancún.
| Period | Cancún offset | US Eastern Time offset | Time difference |
|---|---|---|---|
| March, November (US EDT) | UTC−5 (EST) | UTC−4 (EDT) | Cancún is 1 hour behind |
| November, March (US EST) | UTC−5 (EST) | UTC−5 (EST) | Same time |
How Cancún's Time Compares to US Eastern Time Through the Year
In January, Cancún and New York run on the same clock. A 10:00 AM conference call in New York is 10:00 AM in Cancún.
On 8 March 2026 at 02:00 local, New York springs forward to EDT. Cancún stays put. The next morning, a 10:00 AM call in New York is 9:00 AM in Cancún. That gap holds until 1 November 2026, when New York falls back.
On 1 November 2026, a 10:00 AM call in New York is again 10:00 AM in Cancún. The pattern repeats each year: US clocks jump on the second Sunday of March and the first Sunday of November. Cancún ignores both.
Other Mexican Caribbean Destinations on Eastern Time
The entire state of Quintana Roo uses EST year-round. That includes Cancún (population 888,797), Playa del Carmen, Tulum, Cozumel and Chetumal.
If you are traveling to any of these, the same rules apply. Elsewhere in Mexico, check the local zone. Most of the country uses Central Time and observes DST on a schedule that differs from the US.
Practical Tips: Flights, Hotel Check-Ins, and Tour Scheduling
Flights. Airlines publish departure and arrival times in local time. A flight from New York to Cancún departing at 9:00 AM ET in March arrives at 11:00 AM Cancún time. Same flight in January: arrives at 12:00 PM Cancún time.
Hotel check-ins. Standard check-in is 3:00 PM or 4:00 PM local time. Arriving in the morning during US EDT means more waiting time than you might expect.
Tour scheduling. Most tours depart hotels between 8:00 AM and 9:00 AM Cancún time. Calling from the US East Coast to confirm a pickup during EDT? Dial one hour earlier than the Cancún time. During EST, dial the same time.
Phone calls. Scheduling a call between New York and Cancún: from March to November, subtract one hour from Eastern Time. From November to March, use the same time.
What to do next. Confirm all times in Cancún local time before you book. Adjust your US schedule to match.
