est to akdt: The 3-Hour Gap, and When It Widens to 4
12:00 PM EST is 9:00 AM AKDT. That is the abbreviation math: UTC−5 to UTC−8, a fixed 3 hours behind. It is also irrelevant for every real-world meeting you will schedule in 2026 or 2027.
Here is why. EST is Eastern Standard Time, the winter clock for New York and Toronto. AKDT is Alaska Daylight Time, the summer clock for Anchorage. They never run at the same time. When New York drops back to EST in November, Anchorage is already on AKST. When Anchorage springs forward to AKDT in March, New York is already on EDT. The two abbreviations do not overlap. The 3-hour gap exists only on paper.
What you actually need is the place-to-place difference. From 1 January to 31 December 2026, America/Anchorage is 4 hours behind America/New_York. The same holds for all 365 days of 2027. Both cities shift their clocks on the same Sundays: 8 March 2026, 1 November 2026, 14 March 2027, 7 November 2027. They move together. The gap stays 4 hours.
So take Eastern Time, subtract 4. 9:00 AM ET is 5:00 AM in Anchorage. 1:00 PM ET is 9:00 AM in Anchorage. That works in January, in July, in October. Forget the abbreviation math. It is a trap for people who think time zones are static.
When does Alaska spring forward to AKDT?
Alaska moves from AKST to AKDT on Sunday 8 March 2026 at 02:00 local time. Clocks go forward 60 minutes to 03:00. The same switch happens on Sunday 14 March 2027.
When does Alaska fall back to AKST?
Alaska drops from AKDT to AKST on Sunday 1 November 2026 at 02:00 local time. Clocks go back 60 minutes to 01:00. The same switch happens on Sunday 7 November 2027.
What is the working overlap between EST and AKDT?
If you must use the abbreviation pair: when AKDT is 4 hours behind EST, a 09:00 to 17:00 working day overlaps for 4 hours, from 13:00 to 17:00 EST. That is 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM in Anchorage. A narrow window. Schedule the hard conversations before 1:00 PM Alaska time.
Which cities and zones use Eastern Time?
The IANA metazone America_Eastern covers more than New York. It spans seventeen zones across four countries.
In the United States: New York (population 8,804,190), Brooklyn (2,736,074), Queens (2,316,841), Philadelphia (1,573,916), Manhattan (1,487,536), The Bronx (1,385,108), Jacksonville (1,009,833), Columbus (913,175), Charlotte (911,311), Detroit, Indianapolis, Louisville, and others.
In Canada: Toronto (2,794,356), Montréal (1,762,949), Ottawa (1,017,449), and Iqaluit.
In the Caribbean: Port-au-Prince, Haiti (1,234,742) and Kingston, Jamaica (937,700). Panama City, Panama, also sits on EST year-round with no DST.
In Mexico: Cancún (888,797) has used EST year-round since 2015. No clock changes.
Jamaica and Panama do not observe daylight saving. Haiti does. Cancún does not. When you schedule across the zone, check the city, not just the offset.
Is EST the same as ET?
No. EST is Eastern Standard Time, UTC−5, in effect from early November to mid-March. EDT is Eastern Daylight Time, UTC−4, in effect from mid-March to early November. ET, Eastern Time, is the label that works year-round. Saying "EST" in July is wrong. Most calendar invites get this wrong.
What would permanent DST mean for Eastern Time?
The Sunshine Protection Act, which passed the US Senate in 2022 but stalled in the House, would make DST permanent. For the Eastern zone, that means year-round EDT at UTC−4. Ontario passed legislation to do the same, but only if New York and Québec also commit. Québec has consulted; no decision has been made. Check the current status with the US Congress and the Ontario legislature.
What time does the stock market open Eastern Time?
NYSE and NASDAQ operate 9:30 AM to 4:00 PM ET. Pre-market trading runs 4:00 AM to 9:30 AM ET. After-hours runs 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM ET. Canadian markets on the TSX follow the same hours. The London and New York forex overlap, 8:00 AM to 12:00 PM ET, is the most liquid period of the trading day.
What is the IANA time zone for Eastern Time?
America/New_York is the representative zone. Other IANA zones in the metazone include America/Toronto, America/Detroit, America/Jamaica, America/Panama, America/Cancun, America/Port-au-Prince, and America/Iqaluit. Use these in code. Never hardcode "EST" or "EDT" offsets. The tz database handles DST transitions that a fixed integer will miss.
How many hours behind is Alaska from Eastern Time?
4 hours. Every day of 2026. Every day of 2027. The abbreviation pair EST to AKDT says 3. The clocks say 4. Trust the clocks.
