The Four Networks That Set America's Clock

ABC, CBS, NBC, and Fox all schedule from the East Coast. The financial markets open at 9:30 AM Eastern. The White House briefs on Eastern Time. And the whole television industry takes its cue from that same clock.

When a network says a show airs at 8:00 PM, it means 8:00 PM Eastern. Every other time zone converts from that anchor.

The system works cleanly for the East Coast and the Midwest. It confuses the West Coast. And it forces sports fans everywhere to learn a second set of numbers.

What '8/7c' Means: 8 PM Eastern, 7 PM Central

"8/7c" is shorthand for two things at once. The first number is the Eastern airtime. The second is the Central airtime. The "c" stands for Central. Pacific and Mountain are not mentioned because networks handle them differently.

A show listed as "9/8c" airs at 9:00 PM Eastern and 8:00 PM Central. Both zones see the same broadcast at the same instant. A viewer in Chicago and a viewer in New York watch simultaneously. The Pacific zone gets a different treatment.

Simulcast and Tape Delay

US broadcast networks use two modes for prime time.

Simulcast, the default for scripted shows, news, and most reality TV: the program airs live at 8:00 PM Eastern and simultaneously at 7:00 PM Central. Mountain and Pacific affiliates may air the same feed at 7:00 PM or 8:00 PM local time, or delay it. The network does not force a nationwide simultaneous broadcast.

Tape delay, the rule for live events: the program airs live at its Eastern slot. The West Coast feed is recorded and rebroadcast three hours later, at the same local clock time. Most awards shows and season finales that air live at 8:00 PM Eastern are shown at 8:00 PM Pacific on a three-hour delay.

Why? Networks want West Coast viewers in prime time, not at 5:00 PM. The delay puts the show at 8:00 PM local in every zone, even though the East Coast saw it hours earlier.

Primetime Hours in Eastern Time

The traditional US prime time block runs 8:00 PM to 11:00 PM Eastern. Three hours on weeknights. The 10:00 PM hour is reserved for local news in many markets.

8:00 PM to 9:00 PM ET is the lead-off slot: sitcoms, family dramas, competition shows. 9:00 PM to 10:00 PM ET carries the heaviest dramas: procedurals, serials, reality finales. 10:00 PM to 11:00 PM ET belongs to newsmagazines, late-night dramas, and local programming.

On Sundays, prime time starts earlier, at 7:00 PM ET, because of 60 Minutes and NFL overrun scheduling. The 8:00 PM ET slot is the most important hour in US television. Networks launch their biggest shows there.

Live Sports: NFL Kickoffs at 1:00 PM and 4:25 PM ET

The NFL schedules Sunday games in two main windows, both anchored to Eastern Time.

The early window kicks off at 1:00 PM Eastern. That is 12:00 PM Central, 11:00 AM Mountain, 10:00 AM Pacific. West Coast fans watch breakfast football.

The late window kicks off at 4:25 PM Eastern. That is 3:25 PM Central, 2:25 PM Mountain, 1:25 PM Pacific.

Two windows exist so Central and Mountain affiliates can show a full early game and a full late game without overlap. The Eastern zone sees the late game end around 8:00 PM. The Pacific zone sees it end near 5:30 PM.

Monday Night Football kicks off at 8:15 PM Eastern. Thursday Night Football at 8:15 PM Eastern. A viewer in Seattle watches Monday Night Football at 5:15 PM Pacific.

Sunday Night Football and Other Primetime Sports

Sunday Night Football on NBC kicks off at 8:20 PM Eastern. That is 7:20 PM Central, 6:20 PM Mountain, 5:20 PM Pacific.

The NBA Finals tip off at 8:00 PM ET most nights. The Stanley Cup Final starts at 8:00 PM ET. The NCAA March Madness championship typically tips at 9:00 PM ET. For the West Coast, these are early-evening events. A 5:00 PM Pacific tip-off means fans leave work early or stream the first quarter on a phone.

Awards Shows: Why the West Coast Waits

The Academy Awards broadcast live at 8:00 PM Eastern. On the West Coast, the same telecast airs at 8:00 PM Pacific on a three-hour tape delay. Winners are announced on East Coast time. Social media spoilers flood the West Coast feed before it airs.

Networks have experimented with live West Coast feeds. The tape-delay model persists because it preserves the 8:00 PM local-time ritual.

Canadian Broadcasting Follows the Same Pattern

Canada's major broadcasters, CBC, CTV, and Global, align schedules with US networks. Prime time runs 8:00 PM to 11:00 PM Eastern. The "8/7c" notation appears in Canadian listings because most of Canada's population lives in the Eastern Time zone: Toronto (population 2,794,356), Montréal (1,762,949), Ottawa (1,017,449). The Central zone, anchored by Winnipeg, is smaller.

Canadian networks simulcast many US shows. A program airing at 8:00 PM ET on NBC airs at 8:00 PM ET on CTV. The same tape-delay rules apply for British Columbia, where Vancouver viewers see US network shows at 8:00 PM Pacific, three hours after the East Coast.

Streaming and the Collapse of Zone-Dependent TV

Streaming services have rewritten the rules. Netflix, Hulu, and Disney+ release new episodes at midnight Eastern Time. That is 9:00 PM Pacific. A subscriber in New York watches at midnight. A subscriber in Los Angeles watches at 9:00 PM the same evening, three hours earlier, not later.

Amazon Prime Video and Max also default to midnight ET. Apple TV+ releases at midnight GMT, which is 7:00 PM ET. The trend points toward a single global release time.

For live sports and appointment viewing, the Eastern Time anchor remains absolute. The NFL will not move its 1:00 PM ET kickoff for Pacific viewers. The Oscars will not shift their 8:00 PM ET start.
