The NYSE Opens at 9:30 AM ET. Everything Else Follows
New York runs the world’s largest equity market. The opening bell rings at 9:30 AM ET. The closing bell at 4:00 PM ET. The US Securities and Exchange Commission files deadlines in Eastern Time regardless of where the filer sits. TV networks schedule prime time at 8:00 PM ET, the “8/7c” notation. When a contract says “5:00 PM ET,” that is the law. Eastern Time anchors US finance, federal government, and broadcasting. Not because it is convenient. Because it is the reference.
Office Hours: 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM ET and Variations
Core office hours run 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Many companies shift earlier. Federal offices typically open 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM or 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM weekdays.
- Early variant: 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM ET. Common in logistics, healthcare, schools.
- Standard core: 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM ET.
- Late shift: 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM ET. Some tech companies, creative agencies.
Lunch is usually taken between 12:00 PM and 1:30 PM ET. Friday afternoons often see early closures, 4:00 PM or 4:30 PM, in some industries.
Financial Markets: NYSE and NASDAQ 9:30 AM to 4:00 PM ET
US equity markets operate on a fixed schedule. No exceptions for DST.
| Market | Hours (ET) |
|---|---|
| NYSE | 9:30 AM, 4:00 PM |
| NASDAQ | 9:30 AM, 4:00 PM |
| TSX (Toronto) | 9:30 AM, 4:00 PM |
Pre-Market: 4:00 AM to 9:30 AM ET
Pre-market activity runs from 4:00 AM ET until the 9:30 AM opening bell. Major brokers accept orders during this window, but execution waits. Liquidity is low. Use pre-market for limit orders and non-urgent entries.
After-Hours: 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM ET
After-hours activity runs from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM ET. The same liquidity caveat applies: spreads are wider, volume is thinner. Most retail investors are better off acting during regular hours.
Bond Markets: Earlier Close at 2:00 PM ET
US bond markets close earlier than equities. The standard close for corporate and government bond activity is 2:00 PM ET. If you need to settle a bond trade, do it before 2:00 PM. After that, you wait until the next business day.
Canadian Markets: TSX Follows the Same Hours
The TSX opens at 9:30 AM ET and closes at 4:00 PM ET, mirroring the NYSE. Canadian federal holidays differ from US ones. Victoria Day falls on the Monday before 25 May. Canada Day is 1 July. The clock is identical. The calendar is the only variable.
Forex: The London/NY Overlap, 8:00 AM to 12:00 PM ET
The most liquid period in the forex market is the overlap between London and New York. London opens at 8:00 AM local time. The NY session opens at 8:00 AM ET. The overlap runs from 8:00 AM ET to 12:00 PM ET. During this window, EUR/USD and GBP/USD see the highest volume and tightest spreads.
How DST Changes Shift Global Schedules
Daylight saving time changes the relationship between Eastern Time and other markets.
- From second Sunday March to first Sunday November: EDT (UTC−4). London is 5 hours ahead. Paris is 6 hours ahead.
- From first Sunday November to second Sunday March: EST (UTC−5). London is 5 hours ahead. Paris is 6 hours ahead.
The London/NY overlap shifts by one hour relative to London time. During EST, the overlap runs 8:00 AM to 12:00 PM ET, which is 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM London. During EDT, the overlap runs 8:00 AM to 12:00 PM ET, which is 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM London (BST). The local London clock changes, not the ET window.
Market Holidays and Early Closures in Eastern Time
The NYSE and NASDAQ close on US federal holidays. The TSX closes on Canadian federal holidays. Key dates:
- US markets closed: New Year’s Day, Martin Luther King Jr. Day (third Monday January), Presidents’ Day (third Monday February), Good Friday, Memorial Day (last Monday May), Juneteenth (19 June), Independence Day (4 July), Labor Day (first Monday September), Thanksgiving (fourth Thursday November), Christmas Day.
- Canadian markets closed: New Year’s Day, Family Day (third Monday February), Good Friday, Victoria Day (Monday before 25 May), Canada Day (1 July), Civic Holiday (first Monday August), Labour Day (first Monday September), Thanksgiving (second Monday October), Christmas Day, Boxing Day (26 December).
Early closures: The NYSE sometimes closes early on the day before a major holiday, for example 1:00 PM ET on Black Friday. Check the exchange’s calendar directly.
Why Eastern Time Is the Reference for Global Finance
Three reasons. New York is the world’s largest financial center by equity market capitalization. US Treasury bonds are priced in Eastern Time. The US dollar is the world’s reserve currency. When a London bank quotes a swap rate, it quotes in Eastern Time. When Tokyo trades US Treasuries, it references New York close.
Government and Federal Filing Deadlines in Eastern Time
Federal filing deadlines are specified in Eastern Time, regardless of the filer’s location. A company in Los Angeles filing with the SEC must submit by 5:00 PM ET, which is 2:00 PM PT. The IRS uses Eastern Time for corporate deadlines. Individual filer deadlines are midnight local time.
- SEC filings: 5:30 PM ET (EDGAR system).
- IRS corporate deadlines: 5:00 PM ET.
- Federal court filings: Vary by district. Most default to 5:00 PM ET.
Bank Hours Across the Eastern Time Zone
Banks generally open 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM or 5:00 PM weekdays. Some branches offer Saturday morning hours, 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM. Drive-through windows often stay open an hour later than the lobby.
- Major banks (Chase, Bank of America, Wells Fargo): 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM weekdays. Some branches until 6:00 PM.
- Credit unions: Often 9:00 AM to 4:30 PM.
- Saturday hours: Common in suburban and urban branches. Rare in rural areas.
Retail and Shopping Hours by Region
Retail hours vary by location type.
| Type | Typical Hours (ET) |
|---|---|
| Department stores (Macy’s, Nordstrom) | 10:00 AM, 9:00 PM |
| Big-box (Walmart, Target) | 8:00 AM, 10:00 PM |
| Malls | 10:00 AM, 9:00 PM |
| Grocery stores | 7:00 AM, 10:00 PM |
| Pharmacies (CVS, Walgreens) | 8:00 AM, 9:00 PM (some 24-hour) |
Sunday hours are shorter. Most retailers open at 11:00 AM and close at 6:00 PM or 7:00 PM.
Restaurant Rhythms: Lunch and Dinner Service Windows
Restaurants follow two main service windows.
- Lunch: 11:30 AM to 2:00 PM ET. Peak at 12:30 PM.
- Dinner: 5:00 PM to 10:00 PM ET. Peak at 7:00 PM to 8:00 PM.
In New York City, dinner service often extends to 11:00 PM or midnight. In smaller towns, restaurants close by 9:00 PM. Brunch service, Saturday and Sunday, runs 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM.
The ‘Close of Business’ (COB) and ‘End of Day’ (EOD) Ambiguity
“Close of business” (COB) and “end of day” (EOD) are not the same thing.
COB means 5:00 PM ET, the end of the standard office day. If a contract says “submit by COB,” the deadline is 5:00 PM ET.
EOD means 11:59 PM ET, midnight. Some organizations define EOD as 11:59 PM local time. Read the fine print.
When in doubt, ask for a specific clock time in Eastern Time. “5:00 PM ET” is unambiguous.
