The biggest mistake with "EST to AWST" is assuming the 13-hour gap is the only number you need. That is true for the abbreviations, but the Eastern Time zone you are in right now is not on EST. It is on EDT (UTC−4), which makes it 12 hours behind AWST, not 13. Here is how to convert it correctly every time.
What is the EST to AWST time difference?
Eastern Standard Time (EST, UTC−5) is always 13 hours behind Australian Western Standard Time (AWST, UTC+8). The US and Canada observe daylight saving time, so most of the year Eastern Time is actually Eastern Daylight Time (EDT, UTC−4). When EDT is active, the difference shrinks to 12 hours.
The rule: 13 hours during standard time, 12 hours during daylight time.
When does the EST to AWST gap change?
The change happens on the same dates across North America's Eastern zone. AWST never changes. Perth does not observe daylight saving time in 2026 or 2027. The entire shift comes from the US/Canada side.
- EST → EDT: Sunday 08 March 2026 at 02:00 local. Clocks go forward 60 minutes. The gap narrows from 13 to 12 hours.
- EDT → EST: Sunday 01 November 2026 at 02:00 local. Clocks go back 60 minutes. The gap widens back to 13 hours.
- EST → EDT: Sunday 14 March 2027 at 02:00 local. Clocks go forward again. Back to 12 hours.
- EDT → EST: Sunday 07 November 2027 at 02:00 local. Clocks go back. Back to 13 hours.
How to convert EST to AWST
Step 1: Identify whether the Eastern side is on EST or EDT. Check the current date. Between the second Sunday of March and the first Sunday of November, use EDT (12 hours). Between the first Sunday of November and the second Sunday of March, use EST (13 hours). On 15 January 2026, the US is on EST.
Step 2: Add the correct number of hours to the Eastern time. Take your Eastern time and add 13 hours if on EST, or 12 hours if on EDT. For example, 09:00 EST on 15 January 2026 is 22:00 AWST the same day. That is 10 PM in Perth.
Step 3: Check the date. Because AWST is 12 or 13 hours ahead, the date often shifts. 14:00 EST (2 PM) plus 13 hours gives 03:00 the next day in Perth. 14:00 EDT plus 12 hours gives 02:00 the next day. Cross the midnight boundary whenever the sum exceeds 24:00.
Why can't I schedule a meeting between EST and AWST?
There is no overlap in normal working hours.
- On EST (13 hours behind): 09:00-17:00 in New York is 22:00-06:00 in Perth. Everyone is asleep.
- On EDT (12 hours behind): 09:00-17:00 in New York is 21:00-05:00 in Perth. Still no overlap.
The only workable window sits at the edges. To catch New York at 08:00 from Perth, dial in at 21:00 AWST the previous day. To catch Perth at 08:00 from New York, dial in at 19:00 or 20:00 the previous day in New York.
Is EST the same as ET?
No. The abbreviation EST means UTC−5, which only exists from early November to mid-March. The correct year-round label for the zone is ET (Eastern Time), which covers both EST and EDT. A tool or website that says "EST" in July is using the wrong label, not the wrong time.
