Tokyo runs 14 hours ahead of New York in winter, 13 in summer. Japan ignores daylight saving. The Eastern Time zone does not. Get the season wrong and your call lands an hour off.
The 14-hour gap (November to March)
Eastern Standard Time locks to UTC−5 from the first Sunday in November to the second Sunday in March. Japan Standard Time sits at UTC+9 all year. The gap: 14 hours.
9:00 AM EST is 11:00 PM JST the same day. 3:00 PM EST is 5:00 AM JST the next day. Afternoon in New York is already the next morning in Tokyo.
Convert EST to JST now
Enter an Eastern Time clock reading. The tool outputs the matching Tokyo time.
- Confirm the offset first. If the display reads “EDT” (UTC−4), the difference is 13 hours, not 14. If it reads “EST” (UTC−5), use 14 hours.
- Input Eastern Time, not your local time. Working from Chicago or Los Angeles? Convert to Eastern first. The tool expects America/New_York.
- Any EST time after 2:00 PM lands in JST the next calendar day. Any EDT time after 3:00 PM does the same. Read the result as next-day when your afternoon crosses that line.
The most common mistake: using 14 hours in July. That shifts your meeting by a full hour.
EST to JST conversion table
| EST (Winter) | JST (Same day / Next day) |
|---|---|
| 6:00 AM | 8:00 PM (same day) |
| 8:00 AM | 10:00 PM (same day) |
| 9:00 AM | 11:00 PM (same day) |
| 12:00 PM | 2:00 AM (next day) |
| 3:00 PM | 5:00 AM (next day) |
| 5:00 PM | 7:00 AM (next day) |
| 7:00 PM | 9:00 AM (next day) |
| 9:00 PM | 11:00 AM (next day) |
EDT to JST: 13 hours in summer
From the second Sunday in March to the first Sunday in November, Eastern Daylight Time runs at UTC−4. Japan stays put. The gap narrows to 13 hours.
8:00 AM EDT is 9:00 PM JST. 6:00 PM EDT is 7:00 AM JST the next day.
Book a call for 8:00 PM EDT in July and Tokyo picks up at 9:00 AM the next morning. A January call at 8:00 PM EST rings at 10:00 AM JST. Still workable. One hour later for your Japanese contact.
Why Japan stays on standard time
Japan adopted daylight saving under the Allied occupation after World War II. It was scrapped in 1952. The government reconsidered after the 2011 Fukushima disaster, hoping to cut evening electricity use. Nothing passed. The result: a fixed year-round offset. Conversion stays simple once you know the season on the Eastern side.
When to call Tokyo from Eastern Time
The live conversation window is tight. Japanese office hours run roughly 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM JST. Eastern business hours run 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM ET.
Winter (EST): Call between 7:00 PM and 9:00 PM ET. Tokyo picks up between 9:00 AM and 11:00 AM the next morning. That is the sweet spot. Dial before 7:00 PM ET and you reach Tokyo before 9:00 AM. Dial after 9:00 PM ET and you hit lunch or the end of their day.
Summer (EDT): Shift earlier. Call between 8:00 PM and 9:00 PM ET. Tokyo answers between 9:00 AM and 10:00 AM. The 9:00 PM ET slot becomes 10:00 AM JST. Acceptable, but tight.
Skip entirely: 9:00 AM ET calls. That is 11:00 PM JST in winter, 10:00 PM JST in summer. Both miss Japanese office hours.
Quick checklist
- Today's offset: check the live clock for EDT or EST.
- Gap: 14 hours in EST, 13 hours in EDT.
- Best call window: 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM ET in winter (9:00 AM to 11:00 AM JST next day); 8:00 PM to 9:00 PM ET in summer (9:00 AM to 10:00 AM JST next day).
- Never schedule for morning ET. You will reach Tokyo after their workday ends.
