EST is 11.5 hours behind Myanmar Time (MMT) as fixed offsets, but because Eastern North America observes daylight saving time, the actual difference is 10.5 hours during US summer months and 11.5 hours during US winter. Here is how to convert between them and, more importantly, when the gap changes.

The short answer: EST vs MMT

Eastern Standard Time (EST) is fixed at UTC−5. Myanmar Time (MMT) is fixed at UTC+6:30. As abbreviations, MMT is always 11.5 hours ahead of EST. But EST is not in use right now in its representative zone, America/New_York. That zone is currently on Eastern Daylight Time (EDT), which is UTC−4. MMT is in use right now in its zone Asia/Yangon. The live difference is 10.5 hours.

Step 1: Identify which Eastern time is actually in effect.
Check the date. From the second Sunday in March to the first Sunday in November, New York is on EDT (UTC−4). From early November to mid-March, it is on EST (UTC−5). Convert in July and you are comparing EDT to MMT. Convert in January and you are comparing EST to MMT. The single most common error: using the abbreviation "EST" year-round and getting the offset wrong for half the year.

Step 2: Apply the correct offset.
For a January call, add 11.5 hours to Eastern time. For a July call, add 10.5 hours. 9:00 AM EST in January is 8:30 PM MMT the same day. 9:00 AM EDT in July is 7:30 PM MMT. That one-hour swing changes everything for scheduling.

Step 3: Check the overlap for business hours.
When MMT is 11.5 hours ahead of EST, a 09:00-17:00 working day in New York does not overlap at all with a 09:00-17:00 working day in Yangon. When MMT is 10.5 hours ahead of EST, the situation is identical: no overlap. 9 AM in New York is 7:30 PM or 8:30 PM in Myanmar, after the close of a typical Myanmar business day. The only realistic windows are early morning Eastern or late evening Myanmar time.

Step 4: Watch the change dates.
The gap is not constant. Eastern clocks spring forward on Sunday 08 March 2026 at 02:00 local, shifting from EST to EDT. That narrows the difference from 11.5 to 10.5 hours. Then on Sunday 01 November 2026 at 02:00 local, clocks fall back to EST, widening the gap back to 11.5 hours. MMT does not change its clocks in 2026 or 2027. All movement comes from the Eastern side.

Step 5: Convert using the right anchor.
In summer, use EDT (UTC−4). Between November and March, use EST (UTC−5). Always confirm which side of the DST boundary you are on. Applying the 11.5-hour figure in July throws every meeting off by an hour.

The next change to watch for is Sunday 01 November 2026, when Eastern Time falls back to EST and the difference returns to 11.5 hours. A 9 AM New York call shifts from 7:30 PM to 8:30 PM in Yangon. Plan the week accordingly.
